Plaza San Francisco and the El Monasterio de San Francisco

Photo Of The Day ~ Ecuador Day 2

We are staying in a beautifully renovated building right on the Plaza, so we look out on the Monastery Church of San Francisco, which honors Quito's patron saint.   Construction was directed to begin here on the site of an Inca palace only 50 days after the city's 1534 founding, making this the America continent's oldest church.

May 1 is Labor Day in Ecuador; and we hear there is to be a "march" or "protest" of some kind tomorrow; an evidently small faction of dissatisfied citizens voicing their dissatisfaction, which will start in New Town and ultimately descend upon this square for the culmination of their event.

We have a perfect vantage point from our hotel balcony to take in the sights and sounds of the event ~ check back with me, I will be posting some pictures and opinions!
